Goodbye Germany! Working for TUI BLUE in Mallorca

Working where others go on holiday – who doesn’t dream of that? This dream is coming true for me. I have a solid life in Hamburg, a lot of connections, an open-ended contract, and really nothing to complain about. But then a unique opportunity that I can’t resist arises. The TUI BLUE Rocador in Mallorca is looking for an in-house marketing and media employee. It’s a position that seems to have been created just for me. I profile fits me perfectly and the call for a new challenge drowns out the sensible reasons to keep my standard of living in the wonderful Hanseatic city. I decide to apply for the position.

Hamburg, my gem

Just a few days later, I receive some positive feedback and I’m invited to do a Skype interview with two employees from the TUI headquarters in Hanover. Having done well in this interview, my documents are forwarded to the interested hotel in Mallorca. There, too, I introduce myself via Skype. I’m so excited and nervous, but I feel good about the interview. A little while later, I get a job offer. This will change my whole, but it also means Goodbye Germany! having to say goodbye to my friends and family, which will be hard for me. I give up my beautiful apartment and I leave my dear colleagues behind. But I’m ready for new experiences, memories, and challenges.

One-Way from Hamburg to Palma, Please!

Less than five weeks later, I board a plane with a heavy suitcase and a big backpack; I’m ready to leave my life in Germany behind, at least for now. Up to this point, I had so much organising and coordinating to do that I hardly realised what was hapenning. In the plane, an uneasy feeling suddenly creeps up on me. “What am I doing here? Was this the right decision? I hope my loved ones back home don’t forget about me.” I then recall all the steps that brought me to take this leap. Arriving in Palma, I’m shuttled directly to the hotel in Cala d’Or. There, I find that I’ve been eagerly awaited, and I’m warmly received by my new, super nice colleagues at the TUI BLUE Rocador.

Welcome to the TUI BLUE Rocador

The hotel is in the middle of seasonal preparations. It’s still closed – the first guests will be welcomed in ten days. Enough time to familiarise myself with everything. The accommodations are highly modern. The hotel is located directly on the gorgeous bay of Cala Gran and its wide range of offers are captivating. The TUI BLUE Rocador has a total of 211 rooms spread out over five floors. In total, there are three on-site bars and three restaurants, which should delight guests in the coming months with Mallorcan specialties as well as international cuisine. It’s not just the hotel that immediately inspires me – the area around the hotel, with its picturesque bay, also knows how to win me over.

A committed team

Certainly not everyone has such a beautiful workplace! I’m able to make myself at home in my staff apartment and I have a few more days to get myself settled. First of all, I need a Spanish foreigner identity number (the so-called NIE number), without which life is hardly possible for workers in Mallorca. I also use the days to prepare myself for my future activities as best I can. I’m still taking part in some training sessions to prepare me and my colleagues for the season.

In-House Marketing & Media – What Are You Actually Doing?

It’s not uncommon for people to ask what I’ll actually do in the future at the TUI BLUE Rocador. This can’t be answered simply in one sentence. After all, my range of activities is extensive. For example, I manage the BLUE App, where I prepare appealing content for the guests and give them an overview of all the activities and offers at the hotel. I also take care of the hotel’s social media presence. For Facebook, I post, take photos and videos, and respond to requests from followers – before, during, and after their trip. On the well-known review platforms, I get in touch with our guests and take care of quality management. In all tasks, I’m constantly in close contact with my colleagues at the headquarters in Hanover. As you can tell, I certainly won’t get bored as an in-house marketing & media manager!

On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!

Unfortunately, the processing of my foreign identity number was delayed due to the Easter holidays, meaning I couldn’t start in time for the opening on Saturday, April 27th. But good things come to those who wait. In the meantime, I’ve been working at the TUI BLUE Rocador for a few weeks now and feel like I’m in good hands. I quickly got used to island life and got immersed in my new tasks. A little homesickness is still normal, but – as a part of the big TUI BLUE family – I never feel alone. Every day there are new arrivals and slowly the hotel is filling up. I’m constantly learning and making new memories. No two days are the same. My season at the TUI BLUE Rocador has definitely enriched my life and I’m already convinced that trading the North Sea for the Mediterranean was a good move.
