TUI BLUE Montafon – Waffles for breakfast

The TUI BLUE Montafon is the newest TUI BLUE hotel in Austria and perhaps still the least known. That is about to change: We visited – albeit briefly – in August and took a look at the new building in Montafon. Here are my impressions and answers to the most important questions.

Where is the TUI BLUE Montafon located?

The Montafon is a valley almost 40 km long in Vorarlberg in western Austria, not far from the border with Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The next largest town is Bludenz. The TUI BLUE Montafon hotel is located in the town of Schruns-Tschagguns, more precisely in the Tschagguns district, on a river and right next to the Alpenbad, the largest outdoor adventure pool in the region (to which you have free entry as hotel guests). The hotel is “encircled” by mountains, which gives guests beautiful views from the rooms, no matter which side you choose.

How to get to the TUI BLUE Montafon?

From continental Europe you can reach the hotel by train or car. We took a train from Hanover (northern Germany) and it was 8 hours. From Switzerland or Austria you can reach the area via the A14 o S16. The nearest airports are Memmingen and Friedrichshafen (Germany), Zurich (Switzerland) and Innsbruck (Austria).

What does the TUI BLUE Montafon have to offer?

The TUI BLUE Montafon is a “for all” hotel with 4 stars. So for couples, groups of friends, single travellers, families, holidaymakers with dogs. What I particularly like about the hotel is that it is modern and colourful. Not this plush, wood-panelled Alpine cliché (which I really like in mountain huts!). Already in the lobby, the various seating arrangements with open or semi-secluded areas invite you to sink there and enjoy one good-looking and tasty cocktail after another. The Welcome Lounge – as we call the lobby at TUI BLUE – is immediately followed by the restaurant area. There is also a spa. More about that later. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and meeting rooms with a beautiful view.

As a feminist, I would like to point out the following: The hotel is run by a female hotel manager, namely Viktoria. One of the few hotels with a female general manager. You can tell that there is a lot of heart and soul in the hotel and that she likes being a hostess. Girl power (don’t be angry, Bernhard)! The international hotel team is always in a good mood and courteous. It’s a pleasure to be a guest here.

What is the catering like at the TUI BLUE Montafon?

You can choose between breakfast and half board. You will notice that the cuisine cleverly combines international and regional dishes. Specialities you should definitely try in Montafon are Kässpätzle and Sura Kees, a sour milk cheese with low fat content.

My number one evaluation criterion for a hotel breakfast buffet is whether it offers waffles. Yes, the TUI BLUE Montafon bakes fresh Belgian waffles for breakfast! Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of the delicious waffle because my mind stopped at the sight of it. Otherwise, there is everything else you would expect from a breakfast buffet: Fresh omelettes with ingredients you can put together yourself, scrambled eggs, delicious rolls, bread and pretzels, muesli, local fruit, cold cuts, local cheese variations, sweet pastries, vegan milk and yoghurt alternatives. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. onwards, so you can start the day well invigorated.

This wasn’t my breakfast, of course, but I had the view too!

During the day the kitchen prepares snacks and small dishes, in the evening there is a choice of 3 main dishes from the live cooking. You can see what’s on offer in the BLUE App and while you’re struggling up the mountain during the day, you can already dream about dinner including starters, salad buffet and desserts. There is always a vegetarian or vegan main course in addition to hearty meat and fish dishes. You can have as many of the starters and desserts as you like.

If you then want to dive into the nightlife of Schruns-Tschagguns (which nightlife?) … better stay in the hotel and order something from the cocktail menu! My favourite was the Amaretto Sour. But don’t drink too much, you want to make the most of the next day to explore the beautiful Montafon. By the way, Sura Kees is supposed to help against hangovers 😉

Is there a spa at the TUI BLUE Montafon?

If you’ve had a sporting ordeal, whether in the mountains or in the hotel gym, you can recover your battered body in the sauna and steam room. Afterwards, lie down on one of the many relaxation loungers in the BLUE Spa, some of which are on the terrace, and let the mountain world take its effect on you. Sometimes people complain that there is no pool. Get your free admission ticket for the “Alpenbad” pools right next door at the reception. Whether it’s sliding or a swim in the natural pool – it will be refreshing.

What are the rooms like at the TUI BLUE Montafon?

This is what the double rooms at the TUI BLUE Montafon look like

The rooms at the TUI BLUE Montafon are unobtrusively colourful and modern. Shower and WC are separate. Two 14-inch laptops fit easily in the safe with socket, 15-inch should also fit. There are USB inputs at the sockets, so you can charge several devices via USB at the same time. The bed was just the right firmness, I slept very well. Some double rooms become family rooms through a connecting door and if you like it more spacious, book the Juniorsuite with sofa and capsule machine. All rooms have satellite TV and air conditioning.

It is striking how well insulated the rooms are. While in some hotels you can hear the person next to you snoring through the wall, it is wonderfully quiet at night in the rooms of the TUI BLUE Montafon. The only drawback is that there are no balconies. But I didn’t miss it because I didn’t spend much time in the room anyway. No wonder, given the leisure activities in the Montafon. If the weather is bad, there is still the spa and the Montafon Activity Park, where not only children can have fun. There are a few extra rooms for guests with dogs and barrier-free rooms. The public hotel areas are barrier-free.

Secret tip for the best room view

How about a room by the river?

Normally, the staff at reception immediately think of a room number when I ask for the room with the best view. It’s different here at the TUI BLUE Montafon. There is practically no “bad view”. The only question is: view of the mountains, the swimming pool or the river? The river side is popular because the sound of the river lulls you to sleep in the evening. I had the side facing the swimming pool and looked at the mountains in the morning sun. You can choose your preferred room location via the select your room feature.

What can you do in the Montafon?

Enough about the hotel! You can already imagine what you can do in the Alps: Hiking, climbing, mountain biking, winter sports – but also fun sports like ziplining, hurtling down the mountain on fast forest slides, summer toboggan run, forest rope park and much more. There is a lot on offer for families in particular, as my colleague Timo assured me, who was on holiday with his family at the TUI BLUE Montafon. Right next to the hotel is the Aktivpark Montafon with trampolines, table football, mini-golf, air hockey and many other activities to help young and old pass the time in bad weather. In winter there is an ice rink. Admission to the active park is free.

The two mountain lifts in Schruns are approx. 1.2 km and 1.5 km away from the TUI BLUE Montafon. It is connected to other ski areas in Silvretta-Montafon via a ski circuit. With the Montafon Brandnertal Card (for a fee) you have 79 lifts in 9 ski areas to choose from.

Mountain cable car up, back to hotel on foot. Was very nice!

It’s a 10-minute walk to the centre of Schruns. The village has a few cute corners and alleys around the church and looks just like you would imagine such a place to look!

By the way: with the guest card, which you get when you stay overnight at the hotel, you can take part in many Montafon Tourism activities such as guided hikes and mountain bike tours for free. For activities of the so-called BergePLUS programme that are subject to a fee, you get a discount. Check the BLUE app to see the daily programme or the website of Montafon Tourismus. I was sorry that I was only there for such a short time and saw so little!

We went to the Erlebnisberg (experience mountain) Golm and used the Flying Fox, the summer toboggan run and the forest slides in addition to teambuilding (good destination for company outings and incentive trips!). Put on synthetic fabric for the forest slides so it slides properly and cross your arms over your chest so your elbows don’t get scraped up like mine did. Ouch! But a blast it was.

Is a holiday at the TUI BLUE Montafon worth it?

Yes, yes and yes again. Whether you arrive with dog, child or mother-in-law, everyone will get their money’s worth. Both in the hotel and in the beautiful green Montafon. Whoever doesn’t like it, please write a nasty comment under this article. I will get to the bottom of it – on site at the TUI BLUE Montafon 😉
