Tenerife Travel Guide: North or South – Which Should You Choose?

You’re standing before the decision that will shape your entire holiday: Tenerife North or South? It’s a question millions of travellers ask each year – and for good reason. Tenerife feels like two completely different islands in one, and choosing between the lush, green north and the sun-drenched south can define whether your trip is a relaxing beach getaway or an adventurous nature escapade.

One island, two worlds: why the decision is so tough

The first impression is spot on: this Canary Island really feels like two very different travel destinations. While the south attracts with seemingly endless sunshine and modern resorts, the north enchants with its wild beauty and authentic Canarian culture. Here lies the secret: Both sides have their own magic – and either can be the perfect place for your dream holiday, depending on what you’re looking for.

The core differences: climate, landscape and nature

The climatic divide: how Teide splits the island

tenerife teide sunset

The majestic Teide, Spain’s highest mountain at 3,715 metres, is more than just a volcano – it’s Tenerife’s “divider,” if you will. Its imposing presence splits the island not only geographically but also climatically into very different climate zones. The northeastern trade winds hit the mountain ranges and create a natural weather boundary that shapes the character of each region. The Teide National Park itself forms a third, almost moon-like climate zone in the island’s centre.

The North: the “green jewel” with lush vegetation

In the north, you’ll find a true nature paradise ?. Higher humidity and more frequent rainfall transform this region into a lush green oasis. Here, subtropical plants, laurel forests and dense vegetation that resembles an enchanted forest thrive. Temperatures are pleasantly mild all year round, usually between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius – perfect for those who prefer it not too hot.

The South: the “sun lounge” with guaranteed vitamin D

The south, on the other hand, is Tenerife’s answer to the Sahara ☀️. Here, the sun shines more than 300 days a year, humidity is low, and rain is a rare visitor. The landscape is more barren but no less fascinating – volcanic formations and desert vegetation dominate the scenery. Temperatures often climb above 30 degrees in summer. Perfect for those tired of hearing “you’re not really getting any tan” and eager to finally get that sun-kissed glow!

Who is each region ideal for? Holiday types in focus

The North: for explorers, culture lovers and nature enthusiasts

If you love discovering new places and staying active, the north is your playground! This region is made for hikers, culture enthusiasts and anyone seeking the authentic Canarian vibe. You’ll find fewer mass tourists but more locals happy to share their secret spots. The milder temperatures also make longer explorations more enjoyable.

The South: for sun worshippers, families and party people

The south calls to all beach and sun lovers ?️! Here, tourist life buzzes, infrastructure is perfectly developed, and the beaches are straight out of a picture book. Families with children appreciate the calmer waters and many activities, while partygoers love the wild scene in Playa de las Américas. The south also offers better conditions for watersports of all kinds.

Towns and culture: tradition meets maritime elegance

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the vibrant capital, is your gateway to Canarian culture. Make sure to take time for the impressive Auditorio de Tenerife – an architectural masterpiece reminiscent of a wave ?. La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, enchants with colonial architecture and lively student life.

Puerto de la Cruz is the tourist heart of the north, perfectly combining tradition with modern comfort. The historic old town with its typical balconies and the famous Lago Martiánez – a seawater swimming complex designed by César Manrique – are absolute must-sees.

Buenavista del Norte, the picturesque town in the northwest, offers authentic island life away from tourist crowds. From here, you can reach the spectacular Punta de Teno with its historic lighthouse – a place that captivates with dramatic cliffs and the wild Atlantic surf.

Nature and sights: from laurel forests to lava caves

The north is a nature wonder collection! The Anaga mountains with their mystical laurel forests feel like a journey back to prehistoric times. The Cueva del Viento, one of the longest lava tubes in the world, is an underground adventure that leaves you speechless.

No trip to the Canaries is complete without visiting the Botanical Garden: the Botanical Garden in Puerto de la Cruz is home to over 4,000 tropical and subtropical plant species – including bizarre cacti and dragon trees that will fascinate even non-botanists ?. A visit to the Teide National Park is also worth a day trip from here – the park’s lunar landscape contrasts fascinatingly with the green north coast.

Beaches in the North: wild, dark and impressive

The beaches in the north are definitely different – and that’s what makes their charm! The dark volcanic sand of Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the setting with tropical gardens around makes it simply spectacular.

Playa de Benijo is the Instagram hotspot par excellence: dramatic rock formations, black sand and the rough Atlantic surf create a scene that will definitely amaze you. Caution: the sea is often too wild for swimming here, but it’s perfect for watching the sunset!

For a relaxed stay in the north, I recommend the TUI BLUE Atlantic Hills – an adults-only hotel that perfectly combines peace and comfort. Located above Puerto de la Cruz, you can gaze from the whirlpool down on the town and the sea. Your perfect base not only for Puerto de la Cruz but for the whole of northern Tenerife. Try one of the trendy sports in the hotel’s fitness programme or relax in the spa with the indoor pool.

Southern Tenerife in detail: sunny coasts and lively resorts

Tourist centres and modern life

Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas are the vibrant heart of the south – here the tourist pulse beats loudest on the island. The promenade invites you to stroll, countless restaurants, bars and shops ensure there’s never a dull moment. The gastronomy ranges from traditional Canarian to international – catering to every taste. Don’t miss trying the famous wrinkly potatoes!

Costa Adeje offers a touch more luxury with upscale hotels and exclusive shopping opportunities. It is also home to the famous Siam Park, one of the best water parks in the world – a must for families and adrenaline junkies! ?

Beaches in the South: golden sand and calm seas

When it comes to beaches, the south wins hands down: they look like they were taken straight from a Caribbean brochure! Playa de las Teresitas, with its imported Sahara sand, is a classic, but Playa del Duque and Playa de Fañabé also offer perfect spots for relaxed beach days.

The highlight for nature lovers: Playa de la Tejita is a real insider tip in the south – a natural beach with reddish sand and the characteristic Montana Roja in the background. Here you can still feel the original flair of the Canary Islands, even though you’re in the tourist-frequented south.

The sea here is noticeably calmer and warmer than in the north – ideal for families with children and anyone wanting to simply unwind. The water quality is excellent throughout! ?‍♀️

Questions and answers: Tenerife North or South?

What’s the best way to explore Tenerife?

Hiring a car offers you the greatest flexibility – you can discover both sides of the island at your own pace and reach remote spots like Punta de Teno. Public buses (TITSA) are cheap and reliable but take longer. Organised tours are available for day trips to the National Park.

How long does it take to explore North and South Tenerife?

For a good overview, you should plan at least 10-14 days. This gives you enough time for both regions without stress. The drive between north and south takes around 1-1.5 hours – perfect for a day trip to the other side.

I only have one week on Tenerife. Should I visit the North or South?

With only a week, I recommend choosing one region as a base and making 1-2 day trips to the other. For relaxing beach days: South. For culture and nature: North. A visit to the Teide National Park should definitely be on your list, no matter where you stay. But be warned: one week is definitely too short for this diverse island! ☕️

Where is it warmer – Tenerife North or South?

The South is definitely warmer and sunnier. While temperatures rarely rise above 25°C in the north, in the south they can easily reach 30°C or more. The south also has significantly fewer rainy days and more sunshine hours.

Which side of Tenerife is better for families?

For families with children, the south is often the better choice: calmer waters, more sunshine, better tourist infrastructure and family-friendly beaches like Playa de las Teresitas. The Siam Park and other attractions are also found in the south.

Can you drive from the North to the South in one day?

Yes, definitely! Tenerife is compact enough for day trips. The drive between the regions takes only 1-1.5 hours. So you can easily stay in the north and spend a day on a southern beach or vice versa.

Where does it rain more – Tenerife North or South?

It rains significantly more in the North due to the trade winds and higher humidity. The south is very dry and has only a few rainy days per year. This makes the north greener but the south more reliable for beach holidays.
