Ipoh in Malaysia: The complete guide

Ipoh is not a place at the top of the bucket list for travellers to Malaysia. This is exactly what makes Ipoh so original compared to Penang and Kulala Lumpur. In this article, I’ll show you why you should pay a visit to Ipoh when travelling through mainland Malaysia. All things to see, culinary tips, accommodation tips, what to do with children, nature, culture and transport tips – read on!

Ipoh in the past and now

Ipoh was once the heart of the tin industry, which led to rapid growth during British colonial rule. The city flourished thanks to the demand for tin, and many of the heritage buildings worth seeing today were built during this period.

These historic buildings and the lively street art scene attract history and art lovers alike to Ipoh. A stroll along Concubine Lane or the Ipoh Heritage Trail lets you experience the mix of past and present up close.

Where the name Ipoh comes from

The name Ipoh comes from a tree called “Pohon Epo” that grows in the region. The sap of this tree is poisonous and was once used by the locals to poison arrowheads. This tree is now less common, but its name remains as a reminder of the town’s origins.

Natural wonders

Limestone caves

The limestone caves around Ipoh are truly impressive. Famous temples like the Sam Poh Tong and Kek Lok Tong Temple are located within these caves, offering a unique atmosphere with magnificent, venerable Buddha statues and colourful wall paintings. One of the longest accessible caves in mainland Malaysia is “Gua Tempurung” south of Ipoh – a must-visit!

Public parks and green spaces

Ipoh offers numerous parks perfect for a relaxing break. The Taman Rekreasi Gunung Lang is particularly popular, where you can take boat tours through a picturesque lake surrounded by limestone hills. Most parks are open during daytime and admission is free. For a leisurely stroll, I recommend the Kinta Riverfront Walk, where you can admire the colourful umbrellas decorating the street in the evening. Right next door is the Japanese Garden.

Cultural highlights

Generally, it’s worth following the Ipoh Heritage Trail. In the old town, you’ll pass the Birch Memorial Clock Tower, the old railway station, the Padang Mosque, and the Town Hall. Many colonial buildings create a distinctly British atmosphere.

Street Art and Urban Culture

Ipoh is known for the fascinating Ipoh Mural Art Trail. The colourful umbrellas and vibrant murals scattered throughout the city tell stories of tin miners and traditional culture. The Mural Arts Lane is home to impressive works of art that are not to be missed.

Temples and religious sites

The city is home to some of Malaysia’s most renowned temples. The best view over the city makes the Perak Tong Temple (also called Perak Cave Temple) a must-see. The Sam Poh Tong Temple is colourful and houses many turtles in a pool. For an impressive setting, visit the Kek Lok Tong Temple amidst the stunning limestone landscape. Not to forget the Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque.

Culinary experiences

Food scene in Ipoh

Like everywhere in Malaysia, the food scene is blessed with the best of Chinese, Malay, and Indian cuisine. Besides traditional restaurants, temples offer their own small markets and food stalls. There are also food courts and night markets offering a huge selection of food.

You should definitely try these dishes!

  1. Ipoh Rahmanni’s Chicken Rice: Juicy chicken pieces on fragrant rice – simply a must!
  2. Char Kway Teow: A traditional classic noodle dish with prawns and a spicy sauce.
  3. Tau Fu Fah: Silky soya pudding served with sugar cane syrup – light and refreshing.
  4. Ipoh White Coffee: Particularly creamy latte, a local speciality. This drink is often recommended as the ideal accompaniment to breakfast in Ipoh.

I recommend these restaurants

  • Yuk Sou Hin: The Yuk Sou Hin is particularly popular and well rated, offering upscale Chinese and Asian dishes. With a sophisticated ambience. If you have something to celebrate (one trip is reason enough), come here.
  • Nam Heong White Coffee and Sin Yoon Loong: These two iconic cafés are the best places to try the legendary Ipoh White Coffee. This unique coffee is made from beans roasted with palm oil margarine, resulting in a caramelized taste.
  • Plan B: If you are suffering from culinary homesickness and like a chic ambience, I recommend “Plan B”. A modern diner in the centre of the lively part of the city, ideal for internationally popular dishes such as spaghetti bolognese, but also Asian classics in a cool ambience. You’ll find it on Market Lane, just a stone’s throw from Mural Arts Lane.
  • Near the Clock Tower in the centre, there’s a small food court with Malay specialties.

Not worth the hype:

  • Lou Wong Chicken Rice: Famous for its Hainanese Chicken Rice, Lou Wong is where locals and tourists gather. While the hype around the restaurant is big, the reviews don’t quite reflect this. As an alternative, there’s the Gerbang Malam night market around Lou Wong where you’re sure to find something good.
