When I visited the Red Sea in December and March, it was cooler than I&#8217;d expected. The wind determined how long I stayed in the water. In contrast, I visited Cairo in August, right in the height of summer, and two days exploring museums and pyramids were perfectly manageable.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which month suits you best depends on what you&#8217;re planning. Swimming, snorkelling, diving, a Nile cruise and Cairo each call for different seasons. Here&#8217;s which one works for what.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For swimming, head to the Red Sea from April to June or September to November. For snorkelling without a wetsuit, May to November is most comfortable. Diving works year-round with the right suit. Plan your Nile cruise and Cairo visit between October and April. In autumn, it&#8217;s the other way round: the water still has summer temperatures whilst the heat subsides. Hurghada sees hardly any rain, and water temperatures range between approximately 22 and 29 degrees throughout the year (source: <a href=\"https:\/\/weather-and-climate.com\/average-monthly-Rainfall-Temperature-Sunshine,hurghada,Egypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weather-and-climate.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best time to visit the Red Sea: When is swimming most pleasant?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Egypt is a year-round destination, and you can swim in the sea even in winter. How long you stay in the water depends on these factors:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Water temperature<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Air temperature<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Wind<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Time of day<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Location and shelter of the bay<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Duration in the water<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Your sensitivity to cold<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For long swimming sessions, choose <strong>April to June or September to November<\/strong>. In high summer, the sea is at its warmest. However, excursions, sports and extended time on land become more challenging in the heat.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why autumn is perfect for swimming<\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September and October, the Red Sea still retains its summer warmth whilst air temperatures drop. Even in November, swimming works well depending on wind and region. Autumn is ideal if you want warm water whilst avoiding the intensity of high summer heat.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is the best time for snorkelling in Egypt?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can explore the Red Sea through snorkelling all year round. <strong>Without a wetsuit, May to November is most comfortable.<\/strong> In September and October, the sea is still warm and the extreme summer heat has eased.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winter snorkelling is possible too, but without thermal protection you won&#8217;t stay in the water long. When snorkelling, you move less than when swimming. Your head, back and shoulders remain at the surface for extended periods, and after getting out, the wind cools you down further. Simply message the hotel through the BLUE\u00ae App.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Egypt in December: sunny, but fresh in the water<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, you escape the European winter and enjoy sunshine on the Red Sea. I&#8217;ve been there twice in December, and both times the wind was cool. Snorkelling in a bikini, I lasted about ten minutes. The underwater world was spectacular, but for a longer session I&#8217;d have needed a rash vest or wetsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s my experience \u2013 others feel the cold less. There are also windless days with warm water. In Hurghada, the sea averages around 23 degrees in March. I was also at the Red Sea in March and had expected considerably warmer swimming conditions. It didn&#8217;t feel any warmer than December, and once again the wind played a major role.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">March is perfect for sunshine, relaxation, sports and excursions. For long swimming and snorkelling sessions, book from April onwards or in autumn.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hurghada, Makadi Bay or Marsa Alam: What matters more than temperature comparison?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marsa Alam lies further south than Hurghada, but that doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s warmer or less windy every day. For your holiday experience, these points matter more:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Location and orientation of the bay<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Wind protection at the beach<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Direct access to the sea<\/li>\n\n\n<li>House reef or jetty<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Distance to the reef<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Dive centre nearby<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Whether the hotel caters to couples or warmer than the air temperature, and being in the water was cosier than outside in the cool wind. The resort is located in Hurghada, 15 minutes from the airport, with a sandy beach on a lagoon and wind protection at the loungers. The hotel doesn&#8217;t have a house reef. For snorkelling, you use the jetty of neighbouring hotels. Children from 3 years old can join the kids&#8217; club. For dinner, you can book at five \u00e0 la carte restaurants, at no extra charge.
