Along the Makarska Riviera, days can still be pleasantly warm, but the weather is more changeable than in summer. In return, the coast becomes quieter. Beach days turn into days for exploring, crowded shores give way to peaceful walks with views across the Adriatic and the Biokovo mountains. For couples who can travel outside school holidays, this shift in pace can be exactly what makes October worth considering.

In short: The Makarska Riviera in October suits couples and adult travellers seeking peace, nature, sea views, wellness and good food. It’s less suitable for a classic beach holiday with guaranteed sunshine. If you want to experience Croatia outside the main season, you’ll find a combination of coast, mountains and adults-only comfort here.

Is Croatia worth visiting in October?

Yes – if you know what to expect. October works well when daily swimming and reliable summer weather aren’t your top priorities. It’s ideal for sightseeing, coastal walks, nature, good food, wellness and quiet time. The Makarska Riviera in October offers mild but more unsettled days: temperatures typically sit around 20 to 22 degrees, though they can drop lower depending on conditions.

Croatia in October suits

Less suitable for

Couples travelling outside school holidays

Holidays requiring guaranteed summer heat

Excursions and nature experiences

Daily swimming as the main focus

Coastal walks

Beach clubs and lively nightlife

Wellness and good food

Pure beach holidays

Quiet adults-only breaks

Full summer resort atmosphere

What is the weather like on the Makarska Riviera in October?

Air temperature in October

The Makarska Riviera in October is milder than the UK, but no longer high summer. Early in the month, daytime highs often reach 22 to 24 degrees, whilst towards the end temperatures drop noticeably to around 16 to 18 degrees. Pack light clothing, a warmer layer for evenings and waterproof protection – that way you’re prepared for both conditions.

Can you still swim in October?

On warm days, swimming is certainly still possible. The Adriatic sits at a pleasant 21 to 22 degrees in early October, cooling to around 18 to 19 degrees by month’s end. Treat a dip in the sea as a welcome bonus rather than a fixed part of your holiday plans.

What to do when the weather is changeable?

The region offers plenty of alternatives for less sunny days: wellness and sauna at your hotel, a fitness session, a relaxed evening over good food, a stroll through Igrane or Živogošće, or a spontaneous trip into the Biokovo mountains if conditions allow.

Why the Makarska Riviera is particularly appealing in autumn

The real appeal of the Makarska Riviera in autumn isn’t about artificially extending summer, but about what actually happens here at this time of year. From mid-October, the olive harvest begins across central Dalmatia – a centuries-old tradition where families gather in groves along the coast and inland to hand-pick the fruit. For walkers, this isn’t a hidden event but something you’ll encounter everywhere during this season. At the same time, the fig season draws to a close: whilst early varieties ripen in high summer, the late Jesenjka figs still hang on the trees into October, supplying market stalls and breakfast tables across the region.

The pace of travel itself shifts noticeably too. Promenades that were packed with people and sunscreen in high summer become quieter, restaurants have tables available again, and conversations with locals come more easily than in August. Then there’s the landscape: the region sits between the Adriatic coast and the striking Biokovo mountains, whose rugged limestone slopes rise to over 1,700 metres. Sea views remain a strong holiday draw – even without a beach day. You can read more about the rhythm of the seasons along the Riviera in our article Best time to visit the Makarska Riviera.

Who is the Makarska Riviera in October suited to?

Couples not tied to school holidays

Those who can travel flexibly benefit from less bustle outside the main season, more time together and an atmosphere where quiet is seen as an advantage rather than a shortcoming. Prices are lower too.

Guests who value comfort and service

A reliable hotel as a base, good food, wellness, a sports programme and attentive service take priority for these travellers. Even in poor weather, there’s plenty to do and discover at the hotel.

Travellers combining relaxation with excursions

Set off on an excursion after a leisurely breakfast, then return to be looked after at the hotel in the evening. It’s the best combination there is.

Food lovers interested in regional cuisine

Culinary-wise, October is actually one of the best times to visit: the olive harvest is in full swing, and in many kitchens and markets across the region you’ll find the season’s first fresh oil, whilst the grape harvest has already taken place. At the same time, the last figs of the Jesenjka variety still hang on the trees – ideal for anyone wanting to combine fresh regional ingredients, relaxed restaurant evenings and hotel comfort.

What can you do on the Makarska Riviera in October?

Visit the farmers’ market in Zadvarje

Traditional farmers’ markets in Zadvarje

Just 30 minutes’ drive from Makarska lies the small village of Zadvarje in the hinterland – a trip that shows how people live away from the coast. At the traditional farmers’ market, locals sell what they grow, preserve or make themselves: from figs and olives to homemade rakija. Right on the village edge awaits a second highlight: the Velika Gubavica waterfall, at around 49 metres the highest waterfall in central Dalmatia. An easily accessible viewpoint in the village allows a view deep into the Cetina gorge, with no hiking gear required. Around 45 minutes’ drive away, near Imotski, lies the Grabovac family winery, which has been producing wine since 1812 and is known for Kujundžuša, Trnjak and Dalmatia’s first sparkling wine. The drive there passes the Imotski Lakes, two deep karst lakes with dramatic rock faces that make a good spot for a quick photo stop. If you prefer something closer, the Vina Đuzel winery at 700 metres altitude offers a family-run alternative slightly nearer to Makarska. It’s best to arrange tastings in advance by phone or online.

Hike to Vošac rather than the summit cross

At the highest peak of Biokovo: Sveti Jure

The full ascent to Biokovo’s highest peak, Sveti Jure, is a demanding full-day hike of around 13.5 kilometres with over 1,500 metres of elevation gain, suited to experienced walkers – in October made more challenging by the Bora, a cold downslope wind that can pick up on the ridges without warning. Far more relaxed yet still rewarding is the hike to the Vošac summit at 1,422 metres: depending on your route, it takes between roughly 1.5 and 4 hours and rewards you with sweeping views across the Makarska Riviera and the Adriatic. For those who prefer panoramic views without the climb, the Skywalk at around 1,228 metres in the Ravna Vlaška area is accessible via the winding Biokovo mountain road. Split, with its well-preserved 4th-century Diocletian’s Palace, combines well with the lively market hall and the Riva waterfront promenade for a full day out. Trogir, less than an hour’s drive from Split, impresses with its compact, car-free old town on its own small island and the Cathedral of St Lawrence. Omiš, at the mouth of the River Cetina, was once feared as a pirate town and today offers a small, quiet old town as well as the starting point for boat trips into the Cetina gorge. Here’s a suggested road trip itinerary.

Combine wellness and activity

On cooler or changeable days, spa and sauna make a good complement. is an adults-only hotel (16+) set in a bay near Igrane, just 300 metres from the village centre. You can expect panoramic sea views, an infinity pool, a spa area and Croatian and international cuisine. For meals, you can choose between bed and breakfast or half board. Half board in particular makes the hotel a good choice for couples who like to get out and about on holiday: you start the day with a relaxed breakfast, stay flexible for excursions during the day, and in the evening enjoy Dalmatian cuisine either at the hotel or in one of Igrane’s restaurants. If you prefer to decide spontaneously where to eat in the evening, simply book breakfast only. From here, a trip to Biokovo is also easily reached.

TUI BLUE Makarska

For Two

4

     Makarska Riviera .
